Tina has a Class 1 — Operator in Training License. The class 1 operator's license allows operators to run city's serving more than 20,000. Tina's class 1abc operator license qualifies her to operate water distribution, water systems and wastewater systems serving more than 20,000 people.
Tina hired Jeri Miller as an office manager to assist in helping with the filing, and bookkeeping. Because of the need for water system operators, Tina financially assisted Jeri to become a certified class 3 operator. Now Jeri assists in the operation of some of the water systems. Jeri has worked with Tina since 2000.
Responsibilities of the Certified Operators.
- Sampling and/or monitoring to meet extensive legal requirements.
- Keeping records for #1 above.
- Being readily available to:
- act on sampling, monitoring and reporting to regulatory agencies;
- respond to system inspections, system users or DEQ personnel;
- react to system malfunctions.
- Issuing notice to users when the systems are not in compliance and there is a health risk.
- Protecting, maintaining and/or operating equipment purchased at public or user expense to provide safe drinking water in adequate supply or process safe effluent.
- Keeping records on the system maintenance program for #5.
- Calculating and making chemical applications or removals in order to protect public health or state waters or parts of the system.
- Understanding and preventing what may endanger a safe drinking water supply or wastewater effluent or equipment used to do the same.
- Assuring that newly installed or repaired equipment or systems meet legal requirements adopted to protect the public health and environment.
- Notifying the DEQ of the termination of your responsibilities to a system and advising your replacement that he/she requires certification.

Certification Renewal Fees
Every year operator certification is renewable for the following fiscal year (July 1-June 30) upon appropriate fee payment by June 30.
CECs Required for Fully Certified Operators:
- Class 1 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) must earn 2.0 CECs (20 hours)
- Class 1 WASTEWATER operators (either or both municipal or industrial wastewater) must earn 2.0 CECs (20 hours)
- Class 2, 3 or 4 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) must earn 1.0 CECs (10 hours)
- Class 2, 3 or 4 WASTEWATER operators (either or both municipal or industrial wastewater) must earn 1.0 CECs (10 hours)
- Class 5 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) must earn 0.4 CECs (4 hours)
